The Missouri Province sponsors Loyola Academy, one of the 13 Jesuit Nativity Schools in the United States. The Nativity model of middle school education has its roots in Nativity Mission Center which was started by the New York Province Jesuits in 1948 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Center expanded its after-school program in 1971 to include a year-round middle school for neighborhood children. Typically Nativity middle schools serve students from low-income families in urban communities by providing rigorous academic programs and individualized support systems to facilitate their graduates’ enrollment and success in college preparatory schools. In July 2006, Jesuit-sponsored Nativity middle schools became members of the newly formed NativityMiquel Network of Schools. By 2008, there were over 75 Nativity model middle schools in the United States.

There are a number of primary schools (grades K-5) who are members of the NativityMiquel Network. One of those schools is Escuela de Guadalupe. Although the Missouri Province does not officially sponsor Escuela, it has maintained a close relationship with the school since its founding.

In the fall of 1997, a committee of educators convened to discuss the problems of low-income students and to explore ways to assist them. After a review of various approaches, they selected the “Nativity School” model that had been developed at a Jesuit parish in New York City in the early 1970s, and had been replicated in almost twenty other locations around the country. Loyola Academy is a Jesuit middle school for boys in grades six through eight. It opened doors to its first class of 6th graders in July 1999. The school’s mission is to serve boys who have the potential for college preparatory work, but who are in danger of failing to achieve that potential because of poverty, residence in distressed neighborhoods, or other social or economic factors. In addition to a rigorous academic program that enables its graduates to succeed in college-preparatory high schools, the school offers its students a range of other services including, counseling, tutoring, enrichment activities, sports, recreation and referral to other services intended to ensure their success. The school is located in a newly renovated building in the Grand Center neighborhood of St. Louis.

Escuela de Guadalupe is a community-based, K-5 school that produces leaders for the world of tomorrow. It focuses on providing a quality dual-language education, rooted in Catholic values, for children of families with limited resources. Dual-language instruction helps students develop speaking, reading and writing ability in both English and Spanish. The creation of Escuela de Guadalupe was the result of collaboration by the pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, the Society of Jesus, Sisters of Loretto and Highland neighborhood residents. It contributes to the future of the entire Denver community by giving economically disadvantaged and linguistically diverse children a strong start. In June 2004, Escuela graduated its first class and transitioned alumni to top-tier middle schools in metropolitan Denver.
